Homeland security is sometimes a very daunting task when you are coming back into the country from traveling. It can be stressful and tensions can run high. However, one of the most important things is to remember that they are just people trying to do their jobs.
My first tip for going through homeland security would remember to be polite and kind. It is important to keep in mind that homeland security are just people with feelings. Chances are they had a long day. Would you want to sit at a desk all day and deal with tired people that are just coming off a flight? I don’t think so.
My second tip is to only report what you need to. When you go through homeland security, they will ask you if there is anything you would like to report. You have something to report if you are bringing a ton of souvenirs into the country, food, or other things that you aren’t supposed to bring in legally. So, that t-shirt you bought, don’t worry about reporting it. You don’t need to. It will just waste time and hold up the line.
My third tip is to stay in your line and do not line jump. The line to get into the country is long. It can be extremely painful because of the waiting times. Remember, you will get through the border and be on your way home. If you line jump, homeland security will yell at you. Let me tell you this, there is nothing worse than being yelling yet by Homeland after a long bumpy flight.
My fourth tip is to stay calm and do as you are told. If you listen to the directions and do as you are told you will get back into the country in no time. If you don’t give the security problems or reason to question you, they won’t. They don’t want to waste yours, theirs, or others time. If you are asked to have your bag searched, just security do it. If you don’t have anything to hide you shouldn’t be worried.
My fifth tip is to have what you need ready. Have your passport ready. There is nothing people dislike more than waiting longer in a line because someone wasn’t ready. You don’t want to be that person who has to dig through their bag looking for a passport. Please, just don’t be that person.
Like I said before, homeland security is nothing to fret. Just remember these tips. Stay calm, cool, and collected and you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Safe travels!
